Hello Marie,
Surgeons' responsibilities do not revolve around operating only, but they are also involved in the preoperative assessment of the patient, and wellbeing of the patient postoperatively. Also, most of them have their own clinic or work for a specific hospital and they schedule follow up appointments with the patients that they have performed surgeries on.
On the other hand, if you are looking to have more direct contact with the patients in terms advocating patients beyond healthcare environment, then consider nursing. Also, when choosing between both of these careers, look at how much time you are willing to spend studying and preparing yourself to give the best quality care to the patients. Doctors spend most of their time studying, the average years that it takes to be a doctor is between 8-10 years, while nurses spend 4 years to get their Bachelors of Science in Nursing. Moreover, as a nurse, you also have the opportunity to become a Nurse Practitioner, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthesiologist (CRNA) which have similar duties to doctors.
Stay safe and have a good rest of the week,
Miguel

Yes, we do things other than operate. We also see patients in clinic and discuss problems like cancer, belly pain, blood in their stool, cancer prevention, etc. I also perform colonoscopies when I am not operating.
