What are my career options for a double major of advertising/public relations and political science?

I am entering my junior year of college with a major in advertising/public relations and a minor (possible double major) in political science. I am active with several nonprofit organizations that deal with issues in public health, such as gun violence prevention and climate change. I am an avid writer and reader, having completed multiple internships in copywriting and social media. I am looking for a way to combine these two passions in a way that best suits me.

Hi Monique! I was a double major in Public Relations and advertising as well! I now work for a technology company in program management. This allows me to use my writing skills with our community and generating excitement about our company and community, while being create and building new ways to get people to come to our company and want to be part of a community we are building.
This is just one direction that you could go with this set of majors though, and I would encourage you to really find what is it about each of those majors that excites you the most. Since it is writing and advocating for a company/group of people/organization, take your passion and build it into something that you want to bring with you to your employers. For example, publish some blogs, contribute to opensource articles, or write your own essay to share in an interview that will highlight your strengths, passion and drive to grow.

Good Luck! You've got this!

Alexa recommends the following next steps:

Determine your passion about the fields you are studying
Write or build something new that you can share in an interview that highlights your strengths.

Clark’s Answer

Monique,
That's a great combination of majors! Since a large part of political science is doing research and explaining things thoroughly and advertising and PR is about sharing information with others, having the two works really well for effective communication.

One group of employers I think you might be interested in are trade groups. A trade group or association is an organization set up to advocate on one particular group of people, often a specific profession or industry. Some are large and you've heard of them and some are small or in really niche areas. Given that they're heavily involved in the political realm and advancing their members' issues, your combination of majors is great. Plus there are so many that I'm sure there are some in fields that you're really passionate about.

Carson’s Answer

Hey there! This is a great question and a similar one that I just answered for another student searching for the best of both worlds, so to speak with combining passions under one umbrella. Having a similar track in undergraduate and graduate as you, I've used my passions to not only work for non-profits, but on political campaigns. In the current world we live in, it seems like the fastest way to get things done are through the avenues of local and political offices. When you specialize in social media, that can really help create momentum and engage younger voters. This can also help connect you with more political activists who can expand your experience as well and can help give you direction to narrow your scope. Political campaigns can utilize all the skills that you have listed and I would encourage you to reach out to your local RNC or DNC office to see which local campaigns are starting or need additional volunteers. I hope this helps and let me know if you have additional questions.

Simeon’s Answer

I think it might be helpful to make your own website/blog and work on building a following as a writer on the topics you're passionate about. It can give you an opportunity to make attractive graphics for the website and show your ability to work in mass media. You could work on becoming a political journalist and use the website as a portfolio for companies that are looking to recruit you. This way you could demonstrate your ability to capture and retain attention in political advertising.

It sounds you have a lot of experience with nonprofits which is great. Have you also considered working with for profits as a lobbyist? I know some people who have turned their advertising abilities into very lucrative careers.

Hi Monique,

Your education and experience sounds perfect for communication director roles working for members of the Senate or House of Representatives. Also working on political campaigns will help you on this career path.

Best,

This is such a great question and you obviously have a lot of talents.

If I were you, I would likely look first at who is handling pr and/or campaigns for your most local candidates. Call them up - get in front of them, Some will be rude and some will be terrific. Don’t take anything personally but put yourself out there. Congressmen, city officials, senators, anybody. It is a place to start. Good luck!
