Wael’s Answer

The career picked by family members mostly have more certain and better future. For example, dentists are in a great need in the states and they do well financially. In other words, it is a secure career with a more than decent pay. However, you need to like something to do it for the rest of your life. If you don't enjoy it these careers it would affect your quality of life. Having said that, sometimes going with certain careers that you would enjoy would affect your quality of life too. The financial compensation would be too little or the hours would not be that good.

Growing up my family has indeed an influence on what career I should take. My father wants to see me running a pharmacy, hence he suggested me to become a Pharmacist. However, it is not my chosen career path. I chose to study business administration and hoping to have my own business in the future. Now, Im happy working with a multinational professional services network.

I relate a lot with this question as I experienced to get a career out of my parents' wish. During my high school days, I do excel in my studies, however, I really don't know which course I should take on. With this, my parents suggested for me to take accountancy of which I have no idea what lies ahead of me. I simply heard other people say that you need to be good at math and analytical skills. During my college days, I came to know that accountancy was a pretty tough course. Also, I need to pass the board exam in order to gain a CPA license. Throughout time, I learned to love my course and was able to get my CPA license as well. Currently, I am an internal auditor in one of the big 4 auditing firms.

I believe that listening to your family members in choosing a career path for you is not a bad idea. However, if you do have an interest on a particular course/subject, I will encourage you to explore on that and not be hindered by your family's suggestion. Remember that at the end of the day, you will be the one to work on that field. Life is so much better when you do what you love.

Personally, I think that the person to be your life partner as ell as your career must be your own choice, not someone else's. Of course, you may need some advice on any of those decisions, but be clear, advice does not mean you HAVE to follow it. just listen to it, analyze it and decide your course of action.
We love photography at home and my daughter wanted to be a pro photographer. I talked to her and explained her that unless she is already well connected in the field, I do not see a way to make a living out of it. I presented facts that she could se and verify, so she decided to study International Business majoring in marketing, as she has 4 languages and likes creating marketing ads etc.
