David’s Answer

Hello Ms. M!

While there are people in the field without a 4 year degree, they are a minority. It is much easier to get your foot in the door with a degree and you learn lots of useful skills at College. Additionally, the networking, the connections, the personal relationships, all add to the experience. Without a degree, it would be much more difficult to get into the career of your choice.

Zach’s Answer

The tech field is relatively easy to get into without a 4 year degree. However robotics is a bit more tricky. If you want to build robots i recommend getting a bachelors in mechanical engineering and a masters in robotics.

Soumya’s Answer

Definitely, a 4 year degree definitely makes it easy for you to step into the tech. world because:

1. Relevant coursework developing your background; for a Mech./Robotics, it would be computer-aided design, manufacturing, analysis, coding
2. Projects in school as a part of the educational program.
3. Internships/Co-ops relevant to your areas of strength and interest: Gateway to companies through internships.
4. Internal connections with your peer group and career coaching
5. External connection with alumni in tech. industry-> Networking and connections.

I agree with Zach. It's worth the patience and commitment to go that route in today's competitive world. Most of my people in India have master's degrees and very few in the US have them. You will be competing offshore more and more in the future.
