While it can often be hard to step away from the path that your family has paved it is also very important to pursue your dreams. Just because it isn't a normal course of action in your family history doesn't mean you should shy away from an opportunity and be passionate about your future.
Consider speaking to your school counselor or local colleges. Figure out time commitment and set goals. There might be some classes you can take while still in high school to try to offset costs.

I think this is a common situation where people may feel like they are striving for goals that seem out of the realm of possibility, however don't let that type of thinking hamper your outcome.

I hope you become the first surgeon and your family and set the course for generations to come.

HI Kaya. Think of it more as a personal preference or a choice not a family thing. As you learn more about the possibilities and options in the medical field in college and medical school that more fit your interests or personality you may change your mind or narrow it down to a specialty. Two of my college friends went to medical school and became Ophthalmologists another friend chose to be a lawyer. Enjoy the journey don't get to bogged down in the destination or you might miss some interesting things along the way. Have fun! I didn't begin to know what I wanted to do until I was 35 and changed career fields twice after that. All the job chaos gave me insights that led me to what I do now. How many Master Catalysts have you come across in your life so far? I haven't met any. I made the job title up. Works for me. Get more clarity about what works for you. The best!
