Why should I become a teacher?
All through out my life in school math has come easy to me. This caused me to persue a math teaching degree, however the more I talk to different teachers the more they tell me to change my major. What should I do? If you think I should stay with my major then what are some of the positive outcomes of being a teacher that outweigh the negative? #teaching #teacher

Hey Kimberly!
I love that you are thinking about a career in teaching! My mom was a teacher (1st grade) for 40 years! And she loved it. She said that it definitely had it's ups and downs, but so do all careers. But I'm not here to talk about my mother, I'm here to encourage you to pursue your career in teaching, because teaching comes in many different forms. For example, I am a trainer at a tech company. I teach people every day, and they are adults. It's a completely different experience than teaching children, and I love it. There is also teaching at the college level, college professors are highly respected. And if all else fails, you can always use your passion for teaching subjects other than math, it just depends on your own passion and diligence.
Hope that helps!

While it's true that teaching doesn't pay as much as I think it should, it is still one of the most admirable careers (in my opinion). People trust you with their children. You are responsible for the future of our world because you have kids coming through with the potential to change the world (in a big or small way). I know that right now a lot of teachers are really disillusioned with the field and often drop out in the first five years. However, if you have the fortitude to stick with it, I know it can be really rewarding. My dad dedicated his phd dissertation to his high school math teacher. At his celebration party, he handed her his dissertation and asked her to read the dedication out loud and she started crying. She said that, for her, all the years and hardships of being a teacher were worth it for moments like that.

Hey Kimberly,
I have several friends that find teaching to be a very rewarding and enjoyable career (specifically at the high school level). They frequently talk about the perks being their ability to make a difference in their student’s lives, some flexibility in their schedule, and having summer’s off to pursue hobbies, travel, additional jobs, and time with family. Additionally, you may want to research areas that have shortages of teachers as job stability in these areas is another perk.
