Patrick’s Answer

The auto repair industry is a very competitive business. There are lot of people working in this industry for several reasons. Number one and most importantly is that they love to work on vehicles. Second with most people owning a vehicle of some kind. There is always work that needs to been done and if you are good at it you will always have work to do. Third you don't need a degree from a college to get into this field and make a good living. The best shops that take care of their customers in a timely manner and do good work can be very profitable. If you love doing this kind of work and do that you will have very loyal customers that will keep coming back.

Gregory’s Answer

As the other answers have said, it is a very competitive industry; however, it can also be a very lucrative business. The most important thing you can do to set yourself apart is learn electronics and computers for the auto industry. Now more than every in history, cars are becoming more and more complex and are being run by computers. Not only do computers control all of the peripherals, they are controlling the engine and transmissions. If you learn the technology side of the business, you will be able to set yourself apart from the competition.

Gregory recommends the following next steps:

Learn auto-industry technology.
Get experience with a large shop
Open your own state of the art auto-business.

Sam’s Answer

It's very competitive, there is a shop on every corner in even the smallest towns in America. You have to differentiate yourself through things like: specializing in a type of auto repair service, your customer service / how you treat customers (most auto repair shops don't give customers a 'warm' feeling when they call or walk through the door), quality of your work / stand behind it (if you make a mistake, own it and get it right). The bottom line is if you do good work (ALL your employees) and treat customers like they are welcome (not an annoyance), your probability of being successful increases greatly. It's hard work and takes commitment and perseverance.
Good luck.

Brian’s Answer

Very competitive! Not only are you competing for customers, you are also competing for the best mechanics for your employees. Mechanics can make a good living. It also depends where you open up shop. Get your experience through auto repair courses and working at auto shops. Watch, learn and save your money. It may take some time, but it is a very attainable goal. Good luck!
