Hi Henry, If you are living in a dorm on campus, they will probably send you a list of the things you need to bring with you. I'd say the only thing that I found unique to college that I didn't need already was the type of my sheets for my dorm bed - Twin XL. Plenty of stores will have this length during "back to school" shopping season. You don't need to worry too much about making your dorm room perfect, just make sure it's functional to your needs of getting good rest, hanging out, and studying.

Hey Henry,

Storage containers... you will lack places to store things, especially if you are going to live in the dorms. You want to be able to max out the available space you will have.

Thanks,
Blake

When I first went away to college I took all of my clothes (but definitely clean out your closet before moving because your dorm room closet will probably be smaller than your one at home), some decorations for my wall, and several organizational tools. When you don't have a lot of space, organizing your things will really help you out. For example, I brought several bins that I could fill with my school work type of things as well as anything miscellaneous and keep under my bed. Also, I made sure to bring a good-sized shower caddy. You will most likely be sharing a bathroom for other students so having a convenient place to keep all your toiletries will keep you from losing stuff.

Hi Henry,

If you will be living in a dorm, I think this CollegeBoard checklist covers the basics pretty well: https://bigfuture.collegeboard.org/get-in/making-a-decision/off-to-college-checklist. Some of the items can be accrued as you go along, and don't have to be taken from home on your first move.

From my experience, the best laundry bag you can find is a used duffel bag from an Army surplus store. No amount of dirty socks or towels will be too heavy for it! And if you are living in a dorm where you will need to carry your soaps to and from the shower, get a cheap but sturdy plastic caddy that will be easy to clean in the event that the caddy gets a little funky.

If you get stuck trying to decide what to pack, think simple and necessary! You can always grab something you missed when you get home for a holiday break, but those rollerblades you never used but MIGHT need on campus are just going to end up being a waste of very precious closet space.

I hope this helps!
