Nethra’s Answer

Hi Ryan,

A Data Scientist is a professional who extensively works with Big Data in order to derive valuable business insights from it. Over the course of a day, the Data Scientist has to assume many roles: a mathematician, an analyst, a computer scientist, and a trend spotter.

Nowadays, a data scientist is almost a hybrid role who wears multiple hats in a day! S/he is a Software Engineer, Data Analyst, Troubleshooter, Data Miner, Business Communicator, Manager, and a key Stakeholder in any data-driven enterprise and helps in decision-making at the highest levels.

You would typically be a great problem solver, think critically, and know a variety of programming languages to help solve business needs by building and analyzing data.

Here are some great articles in the next steps to check out!

Nethra recommends the following next steps:

Mehnaz’s Answer

Hello Reyhan,
Data scientists work closely with business stakeholders to understand the goals and determine how data can be used to achieve those goals. They design data modeling processes, create algorithms and predictive models to extract the data the business needs, then help analyze the data and share insights with peers.

Data scientists play a key role in helping organizations make sound decisions.

Riley’s Answer

A data scientist is someone who knows how to interpret data and use it to draw inferences. This would require you to be comfortable using statistics, as well as understanding the general idea of the information that you are studying. A data scientist can really go into any field because that can use this skill for anything people want to study. However, the three general fields of education that you should be decently well versed in would be math, computer science, and business. If this can be achieved, it is a great career choice considering the average starting salary is $80,000/year.

Isabela’s Answer

Data science is one of the most popular jobs of today, yet, the characteristics of the job remain uncertain. The lack of formal training available in university programs has led to both ambiguity on how to become a good data scientist, and an idolatry of those that are able to do it.

Traditionally speaking, data science focuses on statistical analysis techniques, machine learning models, and neural networks. Data scientists are usually folks with a computer programing/engineering background. These people deepen their coding into analyzing big data to inform big company decisions. Data scientists gather, clean and prepare the data so that they can analyze it and extract meaningful conclusions to businesses.

Gabriel’s Answer

Hi Reyhan,

I did like to give some advise on what data scientist do.
1. They basically read large sets of data from the many sources, and make sense of it
2. They then perform EDA (Explore Data Analysis) to analysis it.
3. Depending on what the client wants
- the data scientist might do some prediction on the dataset to basically look into the future of what will be happening.
- the motive might be coming up with a recommendation engine
- or something more complex like working with DNA

Overall, i think data scientist is an awesome choice to make if you like playing with data
Try your hands out on www.kaaggle.com and you will know whether that's where you want to go to

Hope that helps !

Vinita’s Answer

A data scientist is a data expert who has the analytical and technical skills to solve complex problems . Given the data burst in the world due to digitization - this role is more important than ever.

In their job a data scientist applies maths, statistics, computer science and analytical skills.

The data generated by apps is huge. Making decisions based on the data is important.

If you look at the current COVID situation - there is huge amount of data world wide. The trend analysis, projection, learning from data from other countries - using all this data with statistical approach and using technology is what a data scientist would do in this case. Like this one can apply a data scientist's role to multiple apps, domains where large amount of data is generated and where it is useful to process it.

Data scientists often exist in business roles/units and are responsible for making complex data-driven organizational decisions. As a result, it is also important for them to be effective communicators, leaders, and team members as well as high-level analytical thinkers.

Data scientists are highly sought after in today’s data currency led world. They are well paid as there aren't many good data scientists in the world. So if mathematics, statistics, computer science and analytics interests you - go for it!

Reyhan, Data Scientist are engineers that can tell a story or solve a problem with data. They write code, the create complex algorithms and they do statistical analysis. I am a technical recruiter that specifically works to hire Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineers. Both of these titles have a lot of crossover in many companies. Here is what we look for in each
DS
Responsibilities
Apply full toolkit - statistical modeling, machine learning, data mining, data visualization, and data analysis - to develop data products and models that are used by millions of users and power the growth of our business
Formulate a model from a real business problem, determine evaluation metrics, evaluate different modeling approaches, conduct data analysis, and build features and algorithms for the various challenging problems at Postmates
Collaborate with a strong team of engineers, product managers and data analysts in defining the frontier of data products and models in the three-sided marketplace
Analyze experimental and observational data, communicate findings, and facilitate launch decisions
Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality and distribute knowledge
