Investment banking incorporates a variety of roles, but largely involves working with companies to (1) help them raise capital by issuing stocks and bonds; and (2) advise in buying or merging with other companies. Every year, investment banks large and small hire thousands of college graduates to start in analyst programs. That is exactly how I started my career.
Analyst programs tend to grow or shrink with the broader financial markets -- good years leads to more hiring. There is a good reason to expect these jobs to continue to be available through the period when you graduate from college. Longer-term, many people use their analyst experience to get jobs outside of investment banking -- other finance jobs on Wall Street and all kinds of other non-finance jobs that utilize analyst skills. Suffice to say, it is a good place to start a career and you need not worry about the growth of investment banking as an industry since it offers analysts many career options l.
