If I were to pursue a career in accounting, what should I major in, in this day and age and for the next couple of decades?

I know some people prefer to major in math and others just take the major in economics, but is there a preference in the labor force? Will the demand for one be higher, and which one is more flexible to getting a job? #business #accounting #math

Hey Yilun,

The first point I'll make is that a CPA certification is the most valuable piece you can have on your resume if you're looking for an accounting job. Requirements to sit for the CPA also mean that you need more than the standard number of credits you'd usually need to graduate with a bachelors degree. As such, if you can handle it, it's worth considering picking up a second major/minor in addition to accounting.

The accounting industry is constantly evolving, and with new digital tools being created at a rapid rate, there is definitely an aura of a shift towards a more digitally enabled world of accounting. Due to this, candidates are much better positioned if they have a good grasp of technology and data. Therefore, I'd recommend choosing a second major/minor along the lines of data engineering, data analytics, business analytics or something of the sort. These skills will be invaluable both in your quest to find an accounting role and then succeed in the role as well.

In order to truly move ahead in accounting, you will need a CPA. I would recommend you review the requirements to sit for a CPA exam in Illinois to help decide on your college path. I agree that you should take accounting coursework. Although that does not need to be your major to sit for the exam, you are required to have a certain number of college credits and a certain number of those credits have to be in accounting.

If accounting is your passion, you should major in accounting. You can choose a minor in another field to complement or expand your skills. Many jobs in accounting also require a CPA, which you could pursue after college.

If you are sure that you want to be in accounting then you should major in accounting. Most schools offer major in accounting or finance. If you are not sure then you will still be able to switch. I did start as majoring in accounting and that didn't go that well so I switched to finance. From my experience if you want to work in business environment then business degree is more needed. Math could be good but I think it depends what would you like to do.

Rose’s Answer

It won't be easy to get an entry-level job in accounting if you major in math or economics. I majored in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting. Other schools offer a straight Accounting major. Applicants with Finance degrees are often considered for Accounting jobs, as well.

I would say if you are definitely interested in accounting, that you should just major in accounting. Minors that complement this well would be finance or business analytics. A double major or extending for a masters degree is also a great option.
