It is not easy to break into the fashion industry, however if you know that is your goal from an early age, you're already at a huge advantage! Persistence & determination are key. Start looking for any opportunities now to gain experience in different aspects of fashion. Employers are always looking to hire someone who has demonstrated that they are passionate about the industry and are willing to work hard at any level. Expect that you will start from the bottom and you may have to work for free / very little pay at some points. Some examples of ways to get involved early are:
- Paid or unpaid internships with fashion designers
- Internships at major retailers / brands
- Volunteer at NYC Fashion Week

- Personal styling for friends. Make sure to capture pictures of your work to create a portfolio
- Start your own fashion blog

Good luck!

Hi There,

It's important to understand what role you'd like to have in the fashion industry. Merchandising, styling and buying are all completely differently roles and require very different qualifications. In order to be a buyer, it's important to have not only a passion for fashion, but also data analytical skills. These skills will allow the buyer to make data driven decisions that's why not all assistant buyers come into the industry with a fashion heavy background. Most of the assistant buyers that come into the Bloomingdale's program actually have a business oriented background. It's important to have good math skills so that one can understand retail math and how certain decisions can influence reaching your target sales at the end of each season. I'm unable to speak to the other two roles; however, I suggest networking and shadowing people actually in those roles to comprehend their day to day.

Good Luck!

Hi Estefania,
Over the years the fashion industry has changed, with less companies in the business. Even in NYC and LA, which have pretty much been the #1 and 2 cities with the most job opportunities, there are less jobs available. There are jobs out there though you need to put the time and effort into pursuing your passion- be it design, production, technical etc. Just because you may be looking for certain position at a particular company, there may not be 1 available. It may take some time. You may need to think about relocating to a new city, keeping in mind if you're able to afford this. You never know! Keep a positive attitude. Even reach out to a company to see if they have any jobs (that may no be posted) or talk with people- sometimes, it's who you know that may now of a position.
