Hi, Maddie.

In my opinion, you should go to enroll a degree related to veterinarian, as veterinarian related to medical, therefore you should study some more professional knowledge of different types of animals.

As you mentioned you want to be a big animals' vet, if you could get a part-time job that could work at the zoo, so you might also obverse those animals in a close distance, then you will be able to get to know more about them with your degree as well.

Veronica’s Answer

Hi there, to be a vet, you will definitively have to enroll into that career in an university. In general, at the beginning you will learn to work with all type of animals and towards your last years, you will have to decide if you want to be a small or big animals VET.
If what you are looking is some training before, i would suggest, as some of my vet friends did, to volunteer with some veterinaries. Even if you start with small animals, you will get practice and start being involve in that area. THere are great NGOs that look for these type of volunteers. Another option for big ones is to visit farms. There are quite that are open to public to see what they do with the animals (horses, cows, etc). Even going to horse rental, I've found out that they are willing to take volunteers to help them take care of the horses. By doing this, you will become familiar with the animals, there diseases, what to do when they are seek etc.

Hope this helps.

Veronica recommends the following next steps:

Look for NGOs that work with animals or veterinaries that are willing to take volunteers
contact Farms around where you live and ask if they need help or would take someone to see what they do or need help. You might do this during the weekends or breaks.
