Hi there!!

I would google what the best accounting schools are in your area. If you are in San Jose then I would look into Berkeley or Santa Clara to start, but I would also see what's away from home too in case you want to have a different type of college experience.

Emilio recommends the following next steps:

google best accounting schools

It's great that you are already thinking about what you want to be when you grow up! When it's time to start looking at what college or university to attend, I would recommend making sure that the schools you are considering have an Accounting major and that they have a strong career office to help in your internship and full time career search!

Hi! Accounting is a standard major at most 4-year colleges and universities. Once you earn your Bachelors, you can continue on to get a Masters which is another 30 credits (approximately one year full time) or you can pursue an MBA which will provide a little more in the way of overall business classes. That is typically 60 credits or two years full time. Many people attend their undergraduate school full time, then start working upon graduation and take Masters or MBA classes part time. Good luck!

Hi Jessica, I am very impressed that you are thinking ahead like that!. I would recommend that you consider becoming a CPA in that case, that would be helpful. You might want to read about the CPA exam: https://nasba.org/exams/cpaexam/examfaq/
That will give you some ideas.

Happy to answer other questions! Best of luck

Alicia’s Answer

Hi Jessica! Congrats on thinking about your future so early :) You can be both an accountant and a lawyer ! There are many schools that offer MAcc/MPA (Master of Accounting or Master of Professional Accounting) & MST (Master of Science in Taxation) programs which would prepare you for the CPA in addition to joint JD (juris doctorate) programs which would prepare you for the bar exam. You can google a few and see if there are some close to the bay area that you could visit for more information. Good luck!

Rose’s Answer

Business Administration and Accounting are common courses of study at all levels of education, from certificate programs to Associate and Bachelor degrees to Master degrees (MBA- Master of Business Administration or MPAc-Master of Professional Accountancy). Many graduate schools of management (business schools or b-schools) have joint programs with the law schools at the same university. You can get a law degree (JD- Juris Doctorate) AND an MBA in three or four years.

If you want to practice law, you must pass the Bar exam. It is optional to take the CPA exam and become licensed, unless you want to practice public accounting. Most accounting jobs do not require licensure.

I got my MBA at University of California, Davis and have friends who got joint MBA/JDs. I have an active CPA license, but have worked in private industry my entire career.
