How likely am I to travel abroad if I do undergraduate research?

I have always wanted to study abroad, but I'm worried that if I do undergraduate research, I won't be able to go because my project will keep me on campus. Is it likely I'll be able to go abroad and do research? I want to make the most out of my college experience. #research #study-abroad #biochemistry

Stephanie’s Answer

Allow me to plug the services and advice of your academic advisor! That person should be able to help you determine the best way to incorporate study abroad into your college career. Perhaps there's a way to do research or present on your findings at at conference while abroad? Perhaps you can conduct an international academic project one semester and still remain on track to graduate? Perhaps there is a study abroad program that allots a certain number of weeks to research projects for credit? These are questions to discuss with your academic advisor to find out what the options are at your given institution.

Best wishes!

Morgan’s Answer

I agree with Stephanie! Most universities have advising programs to help place you into study abroad programs that work around your academic or work schedule. When I was in college, I was doing research and had a local internship during my Junior year, so the traditional study abroad program wouldn't work for me. I found a summer study abroad program that allowed me the same experiences, and I had a fantastic time in Belgium :)

Morgan recommends the following next steps:

Work with your college advisor or the study abroad program office to figure out your options
Research summer study abroad programs
