What kind of engineering career/major could I pursue if I am interested in the food industry and food chemistry as well as business?

I am a senior in high school heading to college next year. I am going to major in engineering, and although I don't have to declare until the end of my freshman year, I am leaning towards Chemical Engineering or Material Science Engineering. I have always been interested in leading a healthy lifestyle through food and nutrition, and have done several school projects relating to food chemistry and health. I am also interested in possibly pursuing business, whether through a minor or just some supplementary classes. Is there a career that can encompass all of these attributes or at least some of them? #business #engineering #career #chemistry #chemical-engineering #chemical-engineer #materials-science #materials-engineering

Ian’s Answer

Fermentation sciences. There are also food science programs in a few universities but they are not as common.

A little note is that they are not engineering degrees but rather biology.

Chemical or industrial. Get and MBA after you are done with your bachelor's degree.

Hind’s Answer

Hi Sofia,

I am an Industrial engineer and I believe it allowed me to get the technical/engineering skills as well as some business and management basics while studying. Once started working, I was able to work in any field (started with aircraft manufacturing) and now work as a Senior manager on eCommerce at Dell.

I believe that once you have such degree you can then guide your career different paths depending on what you really want to do.

Wish you all the best
