What residency would you start out with to become a neonatal surgeon?
I feel such passion for helping children and babies in need. There are many ways to be found on the internet about what path can be taken to get there; however, I would like a professional opinion on what the best route is? #pediatrics #surgery #neonatal #hospital-and-health-care #surgery

There is not one best way to take care of babies and children. As a pediatrician in the United States you learn to care for babies , children and adolescents when they are both healthy and ill. As a pediatrician you can care for babies when they are newborns as well. If you love newborn babies most of all then you can become a neonatologist and care for very ill and premature babies. If you become a surgeon you will learn how to take care of ill adults and you also can do further training to be able to provide surgeries for ill children.

This is typically accomplished through general surgery (5 years). This residency would be followed by a 3 year pediatric surgery fellowship.
