What should I actively be doing during this period in which there are mandatory hiring freezes in my industry? Respected New York City fashion public relations companies are supposedly not hiring until the New Year. If anyone can possibly connect me with anyone in the NY PR industry would appreciate :)
I am a recent graduate from Indiana University with an interest in fashion Public Relations, specifically Editorial or VIP PR. #business #marketing #publicrelations #fashion

Agreed! Network, network, network! Reach out to people on LinkedIn, recruiters in the field of interest - it will help you to learn more about the career while building relationships with people who can help you land a new role when positions open up again or introduce you to others.

Seek out opportunities to do informational interviews. Network as much as you can. Be prepared to try and get a position in public relations that will get you experience and then work your way towards what you want to do. Just so you know, the fashion PR industry is not glamorous for the first couple of years. You are running for coffee and dealing with people that have big egos.
This is a great time to network (remotely).

Consider taking a short term job with a non-profit to build experience. Depending on size you may have more influence and be able to work a job at a higher level than if you had started at your dream job. Experience is king, don't waste a year waiting for hiring to open up again.

Leverage your network, especially LinkedIn. Follow companies you're interested in. Volunteer your time in areas that will give you valuable experience. Use this time to learn a new skill that could be used in the post COVID times. Continue to keep yourself relevant.

I suggest that you make an account on LinkedIn, and connect with as many people in your field as you can! Don't be afraid to message people and ask questions, or even ask someone to jump on a phone call with you and tell you about their story/ experience in the industry. Don't be afraid to make yourself stand out. That's what LinkedIn is for :)
Networking is super important. Take advantage of all opportunities that come your way in order to build a strong resume. All experience is good experience!
