Ron’s Answer

When interviewing applicants for positions I had posted, I looked for the following:
1) Do you present yourself as confident and knowledgable about the organization and what you are applying for? ( research the organization so you can mention a few things about it that impressed you and made you want to apply. State how your skill set can help move the team forward or enhance their present services. Be proactive in presenting information on how you worked with others, met goals, were pro-active in correcting issues or problem solving. If this is your first job, provide background or experieinces that support why you would be a good employee and meet the challenges that come with the position.)
2) Come prepared with questions about their expectations and what is expected. Does the case load exceed what you are comfortably able to manage? Do they expect you to take work home or work over your regular hours without compensation? If so, are you ok with that? You want to see if they are a good fit for you, not just if you are a good fit for them.
3) Dress professionally. No matter what the position and for what type of job, dressing in clean, appropriate and professional clothes tells the employer that you are serious about the job and can present the company in a professional manner.
4) Have all of your references, medical information, resume, certifications, school degrees, etc. with you so there is less need to follow-up with other information they might require.
5) Be pro-active in conversation. An employer who has to ask questions throughout to get any information makes it harder to think the person will be comfortable or motivated to fit in to the organization.
If this is your first job or you feel uncomfortable interviewing, try and get some interviews for positions you don't even like...just to get the experience of sitting down with someone and speaking on behalf of yourself.
Good luck!
