Solar renewable energy has a bright future. Collaborating with advancement in battery technology, Solar technology is here to stay. Given that it is readily available and renewable, solar power is an attractive source of energy.
Its success and failure will be dependent on geographical location. Equatorial and Trophical regions will have an advantage. With more advancement in battery technology portable power would play a major part.

Solar energy is certainly part of the future, but it cannot be the only solution. From a power generation efficiency perspective, solar technology today is not very efficient and therefore isn't ideal for many applications. Also, many areas of the world do not get enough sustained sunlight throughout the day to solar to be used on its own, since it must be paired with energy storage solutions (e.g. batteries) that have their own challenges. A lot of research continues in this area, as well as into other fascinating sustainable technologies.

IEEE has communities around forging a sustainable future, and their magazine, the IEEE Spectrum, frequently covers research and development in this area.
