Dennis’s Answer

Well, technology careers is a very general category. An IT technician may start out low $30k's but the bigger the company the more benefits (401k retirement, health insurance, dental/vision, vacation, etc.) so you have to look at total compensation - not just the paycheck directly. Often companies offer bonuses which can be substantial. Larger companies have opportunities for growth but small companies are good if you make a name for yourself and show them your value. Of course there's also specialties like networking, security, programming, etc. which can boost that low $30k number if you have a skill that's in high demand! Good luck!

Storme’s Answer

Hi Elijah,

As others have said, there are a wide variety of jobs in the technology sector, but hopefully I can give you an idea how the pay structure looks like for a software engineer. The pay for a software engineer is dependent on a few things: location, experience, and how much a company itself values software engineers. The starting pay for a new graduate in Iowa will be wildly different from the starting pay in California for example. New grad TC (total compensation) in California can be anywhere from 50-200k. The floor of that range will be pretty close to the rest of the USA, but the ceiling will vary based on the criteria I set above. Also I want to note that most salaries will end up somewhere in the middle of their respective ranges.

Hopefully this comment helps a bit, and I'll be more than happy to answer any followup questions (if they are based on location, specific companies, etc)!

Alyssa’s Answer

Hi Elijah,

The salary amount for people seeking to work in the technology space can vary.
Salaries can range anywhere from $25,000 to over $100,000, but it depends on the specialty and position.

A great source to do research on salaries and companies is glassdoor.com. You can pick certain
companies you have an interest in and then review employee reviews and salaries that have been provided.

I hope this helps, take care!

Andrew’s Answer

It really depends on your region. Generally speaking, the Bay Area and Silicon Valley tends to be 20-25% higher than elsewhere in the US. However, do not only consider base salary, but also take a look at what benefits the company offers as well. Do they offer 401k matching? Do they have a bonus structure or stock options? How about health benefits like dental, vision, prescription drugs, physio, registered massage therapy, etc.?

Firoz’s Answer

It does matter where you live.
Midwest around $100,000
California obviously much more.
A software company may very well pay more than a computer programming job in industry such as insurance or banking.
If much travel and client facing involved, that would pay more.
Business translation will pay more than programming from very specific specifications.
