Hi Jeshua,
For working in IT security two of the biggest soft skills that you will need are the interest to dig deeper and the interest to analyze. In the IT security area, the landscape is continuously changing and it is highly likely that you will come across newer vulnerabilities every other day. And the third essential aspect of being successful in this area is to keep yourself up to date on this domain. As attackers are continuously changing the game plan, as an IT security provider you need to be thinking both proactively as well as reactively and being up to date is essential for that.
As far as the core technical areas are concerned I would suggest that you concentrate on the following:
1. How Firewalls work: firewalls provide the foundational layers today as far as security is concerned
2. Understanding encryption and decryption: this will help in deciding on, implementing and understanding about secure communication
3. Understanding algorithm: this will help in understanding and creating patterns
4. System architecture: this will help understand the different layers and interfaces of a system and hence identify the areas which can breached
a. Here you may need to decide whether you want go deeper on Linux or Windows (or any other platform)
5. API: majority of the systems these days are built on SOAP or REST and ensuring a safe payload is very important
6. Databases: understanding the databases will help secure the data repositories and prevent any exploitation
Hope this helps.

Two of the most underrated skill classes I see in Cybersecurity are soft skills as well as basic engineering. Cyber is ever changing and the ability to understand everything is overrated. It changes so constantly that a understanding of the basis of systems, e.g. how things work, is an excellent skill to have. Soft skills everyone harps on, yet we still see people that cannot communicate effectively in Cybersecurity is a major hurdle.

Jeshua:
There are a lot of areas in Information Security, this article below covers 8 skills to have in Information Security and still leaves a number of them out. My recommendation would be to focus in the area of Cloud Computing security as this area has a high demand that is growing very fast. Being able to secure an Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure or Google Cloud environment is a much sought after skill that is in very high demand. Keeping up with Cloud environments that change regularly will require constant learning in the cybersecurity area.
