Never forget to develop soft skills, such communication and presentation skills. As a engineer we work and develop technical skills because such skills help us to solve everyday problems, however it is not enough. An engineering solution it is technically feasible, for sure, but also it is well communicated to ensure its execution by different teams within the organization like manufacture, sales, business and even leadership. Therefore as mechanical engineer we need to develop a good set of communication and presentation skills to ensure every design we propose is well digest by any person within our organization and thus ensure every design will execute as intended.
Take away, never undermine the power of a good presentation of your design, as engineer always prepare your presentation in general level first and share details as the needed. Develop communication skills by performing dry run of each presentation and make sure that the message contain the right amount of detail, the over communication is not considered as a defect for an engineer.

As an engineer, you are naturally a "solver" - you want to solve the challenge; provide a solution. It's important to listen to understand. Take the time to listen before offering the solution.

#1 thing you should not do is argue from authority.
You have an engineering degree and have a leg up on many others on how material things work. It is easy to dismiss the ideas and suggestions that shop floor guy. I can guarantee you he's put his hands on whatever he's talking about far more than you have and whether or not he expresses it well, he's thought about what he's doing.
Give everyone their chance to say what's on their mind and consider it. Even if you do not use it in this instance, you will remember his concerns on your next project and perhaps come up with a true improvement in product or process.
