Doc’s Answer

Choosing a career is a monumental task Pawan.

FOLLOW YOUR PASSION AND IT WILL NEVER SEEM LIKE WORK

ZOOLOGIST CAREER DEFINITION
Zoologists are responsible for observing animals in their natural habitats and looking after them in a laboratory or zoo setting in order to gain as much information about animal life as possible. Zoologists usually specialize in a particular family or species of animal. They begin by studying an animal's origins and developing an understanding of its evolution over time. Zoologists observe how animals interact with their environment and other animals. Zoologists also collect and analyze data in labs or outdoor environments. Many conduct research and teach at universities, while others are employed at zoos or federal agencies with a concern for wildlife. Travel might be required, and work is often accomplished in challenging weather conditions.

Many zoologists are required to complete a zoology doctoral degree and must also major in biology or zoology as an undergraduate. While earning a graduate degree, prospective zoologists will conduct research related to their chosen specialty. Some entry-level industry positions may only require a bachelor's degree, but these types of positions are limited in their responsibilities, pay and advancement opportunities.

CHEMICAL ENGINEER CAREER DEFINITION
An employer assigns chemical engineers to specific work projects. The nature of the project determines the work duties performed by the chemical engineer. After learning and understanding the purpose of a project, a chemical engineer begins to perform preliminary theoretical tests. Once a solid plan is created for manufacturing, a chemical engineer begins the production of test samples. These test samples are carefully assigned to subjects. The results of these tests are monitored and adjustments are made to formulas as needed. When the product has been fully tested, it is sent away for approval and the chemical engineer moves on to another project.

A master's degree is ideal for advanced or managerial vocations in chemical engineering. Chemical engineers interested in performing independent or scholarly research usually have doctorate degrees. At all education levels, chemical engineers have to strike a balance between independent research, laboratory assignments and classroom lectures. Some schools combine classroom instruction with practical work assignments, allowing chemical engineers to gain beneficial work experience before heading into the field.

Chemical engineers work in chemical manufacturing and many other industries, such as biotechnology, business services, healthcare, and food manufacturing. They earned an annual average salary of $114,470 in 2018. Job growth through 2028 is average for this profession.

Doc recommends the following next steps:

CONTACT PEOPLE WITH PAST EXPERIENCES – You’re certainly not the first person who doesn’t have a clue toward what you want to do in your career. Your older friends, alumni from your school, and the professors and professionals you respect will all have stories about how they got through your present circumstances and about mistakes they made — which can help you avoid making the same ones.
TAKE FULL ADVANTAGE OF INTERNSHIPS – Internships are another underused source of career inspiration. While there are a number of ways to get secondhand information about what various careers are like, internships allow you to gain short-term, on-the-job experience. If you like the experience, it can provide a leg up on the competition, and if you hate it, you can still switch majors or at least prepare to focus in a different direction.
TRY A VARIETY OF EXPERIENCES BEFORE YOU DECIDE – Instead of starting with a problem, start with a profession that you think you’d like to do, then ask why until you get to the root cause. For instance, if you think you want to be a Zoologists, you may find the root reason is because you want to help people improve their lives, you want to challenge yourself, or you want to enjoy prestige and respect, all of which are much broader desires that offer a number of paths, not just that one specific career as a Zoologists.

Luke’s Answer

I went to a large agricultural university and what I found is that the students who did "Biology" and "Chemistry" often had trouble finding jobs and had to go get Master's degrees to really enter the field (which is where the most debt burden is accumulated). Many of the Agricultural majors use Chemistry and other sciences. Some work with animals as well. Despite the stigma that "agriculture" is often put with, many are trendy industries like food science (plant-based meats, organic foods, GMOs, artificial sweeteners, low/non-fat alternatives, etc) innovative farming methods like aquaculture, hydroponics. Plant-based biofuel development. Nutrition and Animal Science are also popular and probably more well known.
Most of these degrees led to great jobs right out of college with no need for Master's Degrees. BRAE might appeal to you if you're interested in engineering as well.

Changhe’s Answer

Hello, Pawan,

It is great that you have multiple interests on different field. I am not going to encourage that you go for either field. I encourage that you sit down and carefully think about several aspects. This is true for different career that you potential choose from:

- What is my real interest? Is it my curiosity now or I really like it or love it. Then you can do some comparison:

- What do I do with chemistry or zoology. List the two fields side by side including all pros and cons. A lot of homework is involved. Please do a lot of search.

- Think something about yourself. Such as I am good on a, b, c, d etc. and I do not like something such as 1, 2, 3, 4 etc. This is really a touch job. You have to find out. Without doing an excellent analyses of yourself and the career you love then it is hard to get a career you really love to work on. You may work on the same thing multiple times to reach your goal.

- Once you find out your true love and pros and cons of each career now you match them. Choose the best match as your career. Such as I am good on a, b, c and d. The career I am going to choose a, b and d which is much better than another field which has c and d only.

- It is really hard to get an excellent analyses of yourself. Ask your friends to help you.

- You can think something twice or multiple times. You may feel this is not what I really want to do. You can switch field. Keep in mind, either field you choose has quite a few subfields. You can try one in slight different area. But I do not encourage you do a frequent moving from one to another. That way you will find a job and you will find your career.

- If you have specific questions, please ask further.

Good luck

- Examples you like chemistry.
- Examples you also like zoology.
- What area you feel confusing.
- Have you made up your mind you will not change your mind to other area?
- Any other field such as biology or biochemistry have you ever thought about. I mean whetheryou search other fields.

Jeff’s Answer

Hi Pawan - I think it is great that you are pursuing both Chemistry and Zoology. I was interested in Marine Biology at one point but settled on Chemistry in the end and have not regretted it. I had a couple of suggestions but I think the best thing would be to refer to Prashanth's answer above - very comprehensive (well done Prahsanth - I can't add anything to that :-) ). The best advice I can give you is find what you like to do - many people have jobs they don't like and that is not fun. Good luck!

The career choice you make determines a huge part of the rest of your life. After all, you spend large parts of your life working. The choice for a career or profession is not an easy one. If you find out you have chosen the wrong profession, it is even more important to carefully think about the next step.
Before you can choose the right career, you must learn about yourself. Your values, interests, soft skills, and aptitudes, in combination with your personality type
Make sure you do not rush making career choices. Do not just apply for any random job. Make a well-prepared career choice because it is one of the main factors determining which specific profession you will end up in.

The employment areas for the BSc Chemistry graduates include pharmaceutical industries, chemical manufacturers, forensic science department, plastic industries, agrochemical industries, etc. Apart from these, they are also recruited in other fields such as oil, gas and power sectors and even in defense services.

The B.Sc chemistry graduates have many options for their higher studies like master’s degree in the same. Some of the higher study options after B.Sc Chemistry Honors are: M.Sc. in Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Drug Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Physical & Materials Chemistry, Master of Business Administration (MBA) etc. Certification courses can also be one option for the B.Sc Chemistry graduates is e.g. Post-Graduate Diploma in Analytical Chemistry (PGDAC).
