Blake’s Answer
Hey Jessica,
I am not in nursing, but I can give you my business perspective. When I was about to complete my undergraduate degree, I wanted to immediately begin my MBA. I thought since I was already in school, why not go ahead and knock it out, right? Well, one of my professors told me one of the best things I could have heard. She said that I could absolutely get my MBA, but if I wanted to get the most from the degree I needed actual work experience. She recommended that I work in the field for a few years so that I could truly get the most out of that next level of education.
Thanks,
Blake

Hi Jessica,
This is Sue and I am a retired RN, MSN with specialties in oncology and research. My goals in pursuing advanced education were simple: I wanted to learn more and to earn an advanced degree. Retrospectively, I wish I could have done even more, but life circumstances prevented me from taking on a nurse practitioner education and a terminal degree of doctorate of nursing.
Earning certifications while working was highly valuable to my career. I was able to demonstrate competence in both cancer nursing and research which allowed me to promote and provide specialty care to patients. I supervised employees, but that was secondary to my personal care of both patients and research projects.
I didn't mention that earning more money was one of the priorities. I would not be honest to say this didn't matter. But I did not specifically go back for more education or study for certifications with the thought of earning money. However, having the certifications did allow me to advance and promote which resulted in better salaries.
I hope this answer is helpful to you.
Nursing and medicine are both careers that entail life-long learning. It never stops and it never stops being fun!
Best,
Sue

Hi,
I earned a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing which provided me opportunities to further my career. As a staff nurse, I was very involved in several committees that provided additional avenues to gain better communication and leadership skills. I then decided to pursue a degree in Masters Degree in Health Care Administration as I felt this would be beneficial to my professional growth. It is important any career to continue to evolve and seek new learning opportunities. I have been fortunate to have supportive leaders that encouraged my eagerness to learn. I also decided to become a Project Management Professional (PMP) and have been certified since 2006. To maintain this certificate requires ongoing completion of educational credits. Again, continuous learning. All of these experiences have allowed me to develop as a leader, I am very active and a board member of my state healthcare quality organization.
