Christopher’s Answer

I love this question Jessica, thanks for taking time to ask. In my career I've learned to never take any opportunity or job for granted. Everyone you meet, interact and work with on a daily basis you can learn from. Always look for other perspectives and always take the time to listen to those who have done the job before you.

Also, don't be afraid to ask questions even if you THINK you know the answer. Engaging with people and asking why they or how they have done things will help you tremendously in your career.

Azeem’s Answer

Lessons learnt, do not expect career to be a linear path and be prepared highs and lows and changes in direction. Working for a good leader is extremely imp for the organisation and your personal career path. vs money. Try to work in more line jobs( operational/essential to business) than staff jobs.
Don't let other people/expectations define your path. Do what you love to do..
Network with people in your org and extended org.

Relationships are important. You can learn from the relationships you form at work if you're willing to listen and be open to those relationships around you.

Sarah’s Answer

ASK QUESTIONS! There is no such thing as a stupid question, chances are someone else has the same question and is too afraid to ask. If you don't understand something, ask for clarification. It is better to get clarity upfront than to go down the wrong path because you misunderstood or were confused. Asking questions also opens up more opportunities for conversations and brainstorming - sometimes the best solutions or at least better ideas come about because someone asked a question and it got everyone thinking in a different way.

Be open to constructive criticism and see it as a way to help you grow. It is easy to get defensive, but take a step back and look at how it will make you better.

Padmapriya’s Answer

Hi Jessica,

Great question.

I have a learnt a lot in my career journey. Some of them are learning new things daily and experimenting it, failures are stepping stones to success, fail early and often, think creatively, explore new things, having networks, being punctual and discipline, learning to work as a team, collaboration, thinking out of the box, having mentors, taking responsibilities.

Hope this helps.

All the Best!!

Lorena’s Answer

Ask questions and always follow up with a call to action email or provide a recap of what has been discussed and agreed on. Having something in writing will help along way when working on projects/tasks and reviewing what was agreed on/etc. Also be open to change, especially during these times.

Stephanie’s Answer

Key lessons:
1.) It's less about what you know, more about who you know AND who knows about you!
2.) Decide your personal brand and start building from Day 1 of your career.
3.) Never stop learning and growing. In addition to the topics directly related to your work, expand your learnings that have impacts to people's life.
4.) Pay it forward.

Stephanie recommends the following next steps:

Get mentors who are successful in areas that you are aspire to be
Get a coach

Charlotte’s Answer

#1 - If you choose a career field that you truly enjoy, it will never feel like work!
#2 - Be kind and respectful to everyone you encounter. Relationships are so important and can make the difference between an average and a super successful career. (And, also, it's just the right thing to do!)

Mark’s Answer

You don't have to take the traditional path to attain success. Despite what every else around you does, always do what feels right for you, as along as its beneficial to your career choice and won't hurt others. Its completely ok to not know something, and ask questions...that's the only way you learn.

Anastasia’s Answer

Completely agree with Sarah's answer above. I would also add "never assume" if you're not certain about task/project at hand. It's always a good idea to ask additional questions.

To add something new to the conversation, one of my mantras is "some progress is better than no progress". If a project is too complicated/challenging, break it into smaller tasks and make progress little by little on each individual task. If you're experiencing slow time or feel unmotivated, making some progress can help lift your spirits. This also applies to self-education and self-improvement, not just work.
