You can go directly from high school to a Service Academy - that is what most do. Sometimes it's harder to go from Active Duty to West Point. Getting into West Point - or any service academy - begins the first day of high school. They are looking for not only strong academics but also leadership experience - captain of a sports team, president of a student club, extracurricular activities. Even work outside of high school can demonstrate leadership and discipline. Ultimately, an applicant needs well-rounded experience, solid grades, extracurricular activities, and pass a physical exam.
I personally was recruited for a sports team but that isn't an option for most. I was an above average student with alot of activities and sports on my resume, and all of that helped make me the well-rounded candidate they seek.

HI,
You don't have to join the army in order to apply for West Point...if you apply and are accepted, you will have to serve in the Army afterwards. Upon graduation from West Point, you will join the Army as an officer. Most graduates of West Point are expected to serve in the Army for at least 4 years.

If you join the Army first as an enlisted soldier, there are opportunities to apply for West Point once you are in as well. I do not personally know many details of that path, but I'm sure if you were to visit the Army Recruiter, they could help answer it.
