Whitney’s Answer

There are many alternatives to college that can lead to great careers! The most important thing to do if you don't want to go to college, is to make a plan for yourself. You should consider what you want to do and how best to achieve those goals. For example, trade schools provide great opportunities to learn skills for a variety of careers. Many of these careers can also be great if you want to own your own business one day.

Another option is to look into certification programs that may require shorter educational requirements than a 4-year degree. These may include OT Tech, CNA, or X-Ray Tech among many others! Google is always a good place to start when looking for potential career paths!

Not wanting to go to college is valid! It is a lot of work, and money, to get a degree. Without wanting it, it is hard to be successful once there. There are many other opportunities you can find that do not require a degree! If you change your mind, you can always go to college later on.

It is totally okay! It can feel like college is the expectation in order to be successful and live a life, however, there are plenty of other options. The most important aspect is to have another focused goal and take steps on achieving this goal. For instance, this can be to achieve a specific experience in a work field.

If you don't go to college, there are many other things you can do. You can work at a specific job and get experience in that position, then apply for a higher position. If you did not want to do the long years in college, you can go to trade school. A trade school is much shorter but can give you skills to get a better paying job as well.

Gloria’s Answer

There are many people in the nation who do not go to college and live wonderful, happy lives. I was one of those people who didn't get a college degree before I took on a career. I actually didn't find my way to college until I was unable to get a job in my field during an economic downturn. When I could not get a training job without a degree, that lit a fire inside of me to go and get my degree. I had to get it if I wanted to live my dream.

Holly’s Answer

Hi! Having uncertainty about going to college is completely fine and a lot more common than you may think. There are many paths you can take after high school. If you choose to enter the work force right away, there are a lot of different career paths you can take without a college degree. If you're apprehensive about attending a 4-year university, there are great 2-year programs offered at technical colleges. Additionally, if you're nervous about leaving home or living on campus but still want to obtain a Bachelors degree, you could consider commuting to attend classes nearby. Whatever option you may choose, you are not restricted and may choose a different path anytime along the way.
Hope this answers your questions!

Holly recommends the following next steps:

Find a field you are passionate about
Research a variety of careers within that field
Research education requirements specific to those careers

Linda’s Answer

Then DON'T go to college. I have had too many people in my life who entered college, because other family members and friends expected them to attend even though they weren't interested in such a pursuit. Deciding on the university path to please others is not the way to go. As other answers have already stated, there are other options and opportunities out there that can be more attractive and fulfilling to you than a college education. Nonetheless, leave yourslef open the possibility that college may be something you do later in life. Don't rule it out completely.

Kirby’s Answer

Even if you don't want to go to college, there are many great options out there to explore. You can enter the workforce by joining companies such as Chipotle that enable you to work and rise up through the company to be very successful. Or you can work in other aspects of the service industry such as retail. You can become a sale associate and work your way up their, too. You could also attend trade school and learn a trade such as welding. Cosmetology school is also an option! I would recommend exploring what you are passionate about in order to discover what path would be right for you!

Shay’s Answer

You still have a lot of options. After high school, you could enter the workforce. High school grads could work as sales associates, receptionists, bank tellers, and other jobs that require no formal higher education or certification. If you are interested in more specific areas like construction, you could go to a trade or vocational school. Some people also attend community college to get a higher education and an associate's degree, so that could be an option. Another great option is military service. Army recruiters are constantly looking for high school students and grads to join. You don't have to be on the front lines in combat, as there are several options within the military.

You could also start a career as a freelancer, where you perform unique services for companies or people on your own schedule. You could be a freelance marketer, social media creator, or really anything else. As a younger student, you could contact smaller companies and offer your services for lower prices than large firms, citing that you can add value since you're willing to learn and know a lot about the younger market (because you're young). Other ways to earn supplemental income would be individual services for people like babysitting, mowing lawns, or shoveling snow. You could also sell items on Ebay, Craiglist, Amazon, LetGo, or really any website/online platform.

If you have some money or capital, you could invest in the stock market and try to make money that way. There are several stocks, ETFs, mutual funds, bonds, and other financial instruments that offer good returns in the short and long run. You could try to day trade if you want to make small amounts of money quickly, but as with most trades these are taxed.
