Darin’s Answer
Hello Jessica, there are almost always opportunities for advancement in any place of employment. Also opportunities for advancement won't always come to you, sometimes you need to come to them. If you have a place in mind you want to be within your employer or potential employer you are interviewing for, express interest that way the next time that opportunity does come up your manager can approach you or put your name out there to the interviewer looking for that position. Sometimes your manager may even approach you and say they have an opportunity in mind for you they think you'd be a perfect match for. All it takes to land an opportunity is hard work, dedication, showing your employer or potential employer you are reliable and time. Best of luck!

After residency, physicians choose private practice or academic medicine.
In academics there are opportunities to advance from instructor all the way to full professor and even chairman of department based on teaching, research and clinical duties.
Many private practices start new physicians as associates but allow them to buy into the practice to become partners after a set number of years.
