If someone is hurt and the office is about to close, do you still help the person or tell them to go somewhere else? Would I be responsible for them?

Richard’s Answer

Emergency rooms and urgent care centers provide care after hours. My radiology group reads films for numerous ERs and people come to the ER for both minor and major issues throughout the night.

Estelle’s Answer

Sometimes I refer patients to urgent care centers if the problem is out of my field, and sometimes I meet them at the emergency room. If I am unavailable, the emergency room physician will take care of them for me, or a colleague will take call for me. In general, the doctor who assumes the patient's care for that particular emergency takes responsibility during that immediate period.

Dan’s Answer

Usually the patient would have to go to the Emergency department for after-hour issues. If they require help on short notice, your clinic may have walk-in hours. If this is in a hospital setting, there is either a after hours provider or a provider on-call.
