The criteria are based on requirements of the FAA. They include a written exam, a oral exam and a flight test. There's several different levels of certification for pilots; sport, recreational, private, commercial and airline transport pilot. Each level requires a different amount of flying time and flight experience.
If you're interested in becoming a pilot, visit your local small airport to see if there's a flight school or google flight schools in your area. They will be able to guide you and inform you of the costs of training. Good luck!

First and foremost, you have to love what you do! Don't become a pilot because you think its glamorous, or someone told you its cool, or you think that you are going to make a lot of money doing it. Become a pilot because you want it more than anything else. Being a pilot is a lot of responsibility and it takes a lot of hard work to achieve, not to mention that you put your life on the line every time you take off. Being a pilot is not a part time job.
As mentioned in the other responses, there are various searches you can perform to get the requirements, which vary with your location. Every country will have different requirements based on regulations. Also, try to plan for the future, you will benefit by having a college degree as well.
Good luck!
