Wow Rayann! I love your enthusiasm and readiness to learn. I am currently a Finance major in college and have found myself asking the same question about being a successful business woman as well. I think the first thing I learned fast is that there are going to be times when you have to put yourself out there even if it feels uncomfortable. Being confident and assertive are key components especially at times when it is easy to feel threatened by being the minority in the field. Another crucial part of success will be networking with as many people as you can. This includes business professionals who come talk to your class, professors, other students, people you find on LinkedIn, etc.

My last suggestion is a book that I read when I started out my business schooling that really changed my thought process on women in business. It is called Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg. This offers so much insight!!

Best of Luck, and feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn.

Carina’s Answer

Hello Rayann!
I don't have the perfect answer for how to be a successful woman in business but here a few things that have helped me:

- find role models both in your field and outside it
- be open to all opportunities
- find something that you're really good at (optimism, attention to detail, etc.); then utilize it and make it your superpower
- apply for positions even if you don't feel qualified
- ask tons of questions

Here are a few things I wish I'd known:

- the best mentorships will happen naturally
- you are going to mess up and it's okay
- don't burn bridges; keep good relationships with everyone

Good luck!

David’s Answer

Successful business women and men typically possess a broad understanding of things like finance, operations, marketing, economics, human resources, and leadership to name a few. Each of these buckets of knowledge could be further expanded and explored to help increase efficiency as well as agility as one improves their understanding of market conditions, industry competitors, and other external influences that would certainly affect business outcomes.

It's important to also mention that success could be measured in different ways. Not everyone that is wealthy is necessarily happy with their lives or enjoy what they do to make a living. Success in business, or life for that matter can only be measured by the person living it and by the standards set by that person. Determine what you enjoy doing that seems to best align with your sense of purpose, then talk with people that you know work in that particular business to gain their perspective of how they enjoy their work and why. This will help steer you in the right direction of which business you'd like to pursue, and which educational courses would put you on track to reach your own success.

KEITH’s Answer

Rayann,
You first must establish your definition of success. Is it wealth, title, status or impact? Changing the world and make it better certainly shows your desire to have an impact.
Focus on an industry or business where you have passion. It is far easier to work in a field you love rather than grind in one that is hollow for you.
Education never stops. Learn everything you can about your company and industry. Never stop asking questions. Be curious and creative. The best question is the one to ask yourself. “Did I deliver value today?”
Finally, the simple answer is to be honest, be fair and always do the right thing.
Wishing you the greatest success.
Keith
