Will there be abroad remote Internships in 2020/2021?

Considering that the Covid situation won't end soon do you think there will be remote internships in the IT field?
I think that this choice for IT companies should be really interesting because at least you don't have additional costs except the salary, so I'd like to hear your point of view about this.

As far as I am aware, all of our summer interns (beginning between May-June) were intended to be local through relocation, but instead, all worked remotely due to COVID.

Our Work From Home policy has extended through the rest of 2020, so I would not be surprised if all internships through 2020 remain remote.

So we work at an engineering company that usually requires a lot of in-person work. However, even with the situation, we have managed to maintain our remote internships. I would imagine a lot of other companies would be able to do this as well, especially in the computer science field.

Yes, I think remote work has become a big topic of conversation for many companies. We have been able to convert our on campus internship to a virtual program and it has been very successful.

There is also the added advantage of hiring top talent from further afield. Opening up campus programs to a wider pool of University students means companies have the opportunity to find talent they might otherwise never have come across.

It will also help with bringing more diversity to companies and with diverse talent brings diverse ideas, helping to create products and services that serve a diverse client base.

Absolutely, many companies across the world are adjusting to our new "virtual" and remote routine. My advice for looking for internships is to create a Linked in profile if you haven't already, follow companies on LinkedIn and activate job alert (you can filter alerts just for internship positions). I did that when I was looking for internships. This helps you seeing what's out there and help you clarify what you would like to do. You will see each internship description will specify if it can be remote. Remember companies are becoming increasingly agile and flexible, so they will accommodate remote jobs more and more.

Jo’s Answer

Hi there,

My company too has chosen to do its internships virtually. Firstly to cope with all the ambiguity and making sure we plan an overall program that is robust against any COVID-19 measures. And secondly because we successfully managed to run these virtually last year!
We concluded our internships being virtual didn't impact our interns satisfaction with the program and neither did it affect their career progression! 88% of our virtual interns joined us as full time software engineers after their graduation.

Thank you,

Jo

Pratim’s Answer

Yes, most of the IT companies who had selected students in our college are providing a Work From Home mode of internship. I being one of the interns at SAP Labs this summer found that there are no major challenges in a virtual internship, as all the meetings are shifted to Microsoft Teams and Zoom. Don't know if the same is true for abroad internships, because of different timezones, communication with the team members could become difficult.
So yes, I think remote internships would be the way forward for the IT field until the Covid situation resolves.
