What can I do virtually to build up my OT grad school application?

Hi! I hoping to study OT in the future for grad school. However, due to COVID-19, I am not planning to volunteer at the hospital or old folks home. May I know what other things I can do virtually to build up a stronger OT grad school application?

Thank you and I hope you are all staying safe!

Alexa’s Answer

Hi there! I'm an SLP (speech-language pathologist) so not an OT, but both professions work along side each other in many settings so I feel like I can answer this question for you. Outside of a nursing home or hospital, there are many ways you can get involved in volunteering without direct contact. As you may know, OTs can work in private practice settings or in school systems as well. I would reach out to any local practices or schools in your area and see if you would be allowed to shadow an OT. Both of these settings are well equipped for teletherapy, so I'm sure you could reach out and see if they would let you sit in on Zoom sessions with patients/students. This is my first recommendation.

My second recommendation would be to research non profit organizations in your area and see if they need anyone to help them with anything. While people in these settings may not necessarily be receiving treatment for anything, it shows that you care about the populations you will be working with as an OT. For example, the Alzheimer's Association would be a great place to ask about volunteer work. Places like this are always looking for volunteers, especially now due to covid. Hope all of this helps!

Hi Chloe,

LinkedIn Learning offers a variety of free courses / programs which you can select from based on your interest. Here are some on OT. You can add this to your CV / Resume which may add more weight to your application.
