Double Major vs Major & Minor

I'm hoping to major in Mechanical Engineering as well as Astronomy but I am not sure as to whether I want to do so via double majoring or perhaps having a major in MechE and a minor in Astro. What're the pros and cons to both of these paths? #JULY20 #double-major #majors-and-minors

Hi Denzel,
I wouldn't stress or worry about it too much. If you think that majoring in Astronomy would make you feel good then totally go for it but minoring in it is still sufficient. Or even if it's just a passion of yours to learn it as a hobby remember you can learn about it on your own through books and websites like Coursera. You should be well off in any engineering major as there are plenty of jobs in that sector. Also, keep in mind real-world experience is more valuable once you plan on applying for your first job out of college.

Those are both great aspirations!
In my personal experience very rarely did students get the all clear to double major, as a universities stats are based off of how many students are successfully graduating from the college, and when a student double majors it almost always ensures that they will be at the school longer which may look bad for them.
I wanted to minor in quite a few things when in school and each time I mentioned it to a counselor or professor they warned against it, stating that it did little to help impact your career. I still got a minor in Native American Studies, which is the complete opposite of my Zoology degree, though this was due to taking most of my general ED's in NAS (I greatly enjoy the topic) and less of it possibly helping my degree.
In my personal opinion, get a minor in it if its something you are greatly interested in, but I would only do so if it does not lead to extended semesters at your current Uni. Astronomy is always something you can circle back to later and take courses about at a Community college for less $$$.
