Does TARGET SCHOOL really matter?

According to what I've heard about the recruitment process of top IBD/Consulting firms, "target school" is the very first step to help you stand out. That's to say, without a privileged bachelor background on your resumé, it would seem to be impossible for you to enter those firms no matter what other qualification you've had.
Then I was wondering if those so-called "target school" is really that vital compared with candidate's qualities?

It's been my experience that "target schools" will help you upon graduation with some top companies. However, if you do very well in most undergraduate programs and then go to a target school for graduate school that works too. In addition, if you just do very well and secure your first position to gain experience you can work your way toward the top company you're interested in by working hard, meeting people in your field, socializing at conferences with folks that work in those top companies and applying once your resume is solid.

Its always better to preplan your career.
Based on the career you would have to make a list of schools that is best suitable.
First preference will be given to better colleges and the companies would recruit from those college.
The reputation set by the college will automatically drag the companies for recruitment.
So setting your Target school is always better for your future.
Greater opportunities and exposure to the industrial standards would be provided by the reputed colleges.

Rebecca’s Answer

This is a good question. I think enter 'Target School' may help at the very beginning when you start to work after the graduation. However, when you career progress, it is really subject to your own performance and achievement. Even you are not able to enter the 'Target School', there are a lot of good schools. You can still learn the knowledge in these schools.
On the other hand, you can also consider to continue your post graduate study in the 'Target School' after completing your bachelor degree. You may have to achieve good academic result in the 1st degree.
As aforementioned, this is on the 1st step. If you perform well in the job, you can still have the opportunities to work in the prestige companies . The academic result may no longer their priority when choosing the right candidate.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
