Hi Jinah!

I hope all is well. A few majors/minors I've come across for people interested in Fashion are:

Major in Fashion Merchandising
Major in Fashion Design

Major in Business and a minor in fashion merchandising
Major in Fashion Merchandising and a minor in Business

Minor in Fashion Design
It all depends on what school you attend when it comes to the title of the
Fashion program, but these are common matches I've come across. I recommend
taking some time to look at schools that have a fashion major and see which aligns
the most with what you are seeking in a degree program.

I hope this helps, take care!

Hi Jinah,

I think the answers given are good, another interest you could pursue is marketing/merchandising. Here is a link that shows some jobs blending both Econ/Fashion: https://study.com/articles/marketing_careers_in_the_fashion_industry.html

Because both areas are heavily related, you may want to try to narrow down your love of fashion to see which part of the industry you actually like. Ex: Event planning, design, marketing, purchase, import/export, etc. Once you realize which part of fashion you actually like, you could make a better informed decision about your minor. Good luck!

PS - I used to teach at Korea University in Sejong, and my friends taught at HongIk very close by (these are all second campuses to Seoul locations). There were a lot of fashion majors with minors in Economics, which is a reversal of you, but closely connected. It may be a good idea to check out HongIk's website to see what the majors and minors for Econ and Fashion are to give you a better idea.

Nathalie’s Answer

Hi Jinah,

When considering minors, I recommend languages. Studying European languages, French, Italian, Spanish is not a big lift and it will be helpful in any industry. Thinking about the world of fashion, this may give you an edge, you could take a job in Milan or Barcelona or Paris. Languages are a window to the world. Choose your major based on the industry must have but having an edge will put you on top. I am French and I started my career in Germany with just languages. I worked and lived in Ireland as well for 17 years and now I am a technical Program manager in the US..
For your consideration

Hanna’s Answer

Hi Jinah!

I have my major in Fashion Merchandising and a Minor in Business Administration from LSU in 2011. I think it was a great combination and built a nice platform for understanding the ins and outs of a retail business, finances, economics, etc. I went on to focus in marketing/ecommerce and received my MBA after graduation to further allow my resume to stand out. I would recommend Business Administration as a minor!

Hope this helps,

Hanna

Adrianna’s Answer

In going to school to get a degree in Zoology I was told repeatedly that minors play very little into the role of which jobs you will get. It will all come down to what classes you've taken. So for example, I have a degree in Zoology and a minor in Native American studies (2 very unrelated) I didn't do this intentionally, but found that I enjoyed the information from both of these studies. The minor degree will probably do very little to help push forward my Zoology degree, but I think it shows that I have a well rounded education.

If you are dead set on getting a minor, totally do it! I suggest that if you want it to be closely connected to your field that you look at minors that have classes that you think will help push you forward and make you a more competitive candidate.
Thank you comment icon thank you! i've always thought minors played a big role but maybe i was wrong :)) Jinah
Thank you comment icon I would recommend talking to a student counselor and advisor as it may be different for all majors. Adrianna Chabot
