Hi Roxanne,

Great question. I can't affirmatively say having a certification will lead an employer to compensate you more, as this will depend on the individual company. However, having a professional certification shows your commitment to the industry and helps establish credibility with both internal and external business partners. I do believe having a professional certification/designation helps set you apart from candidates - but ultimately, as Toyin said, it's going to come down to your individual knowledge, skills and abilities. My recommendation would be to pursue a certification and continue your education within your industry. I hope that helps!

Toyin’s Answer

Hi Roxanne,

This often depends on the specific field. While many employers place more importance on skills and experience, having a certification can often make a job seeker stand out. A certification can further emphasize your credibility, knowledge and expertise in your field. Having a certification can also prove very effective in the medical field and other over-saturated fields.

In some cases, job seekers and experienced professionals get to a point in their careers where they want to earn more and may need to decide between an academic degree and a certification, it's usually best to go with a certification due to cost and time saving factors.

In my experience, a certification has helped build my credibility in my field and certainly made it easier to be considered for job opportunities but at the end of the day, my skills and experience helped me "seal the deal".

Best of luck to you!
