Olivia’s Answer

College applications are often reviewed through a holistic approach, meaning that the people reading and judging your application are likely to examine all aspects of your resume before deciding whether or not you would be a good match for a particular school. Because of this, there's no real "perfect" amount of community service hours to make your application stand out. Some people may dedicate all of their time to volunteering, while another's schedule may not allow it, because they are the captain of their school's math team.

I suggest that the best way to determine your personal 'volunteer goal' is to take a look at your application as a whole.

Find a way to give back through something you are passionate about. Make it a part of your weekly plan. Practice & learn. You don't necessarily need a certain number of community service hours to stand out, but you should be able to articulate why your personal community service experience was valuable.

Daniel’s Answer

Hi Daniel, I would approach it from a quality perspective rather than quantity. As Olivia mentioned in her answer, schools often take a holistic approach to reviewing applications. There isn't necessarily a magic number of hours that you need to achieve. What you should focus on is finding organizations to volunteer with where you're passionate about their mission. By working with an organization you're passionate about you'll gain much more from the experience, you'll be more engaged, and it will show in your service to the organization. It will be much more meaningful in your application and in your essays if you can speak to why you volunteered with an organization and what you learned from the experience rather than just being able to show that you volunteered the most hours.
