Susie’s Answer
I work in the outpatient pediatric clinic of large community hospital. I am the only pediatric PT who works in outpatient, so I evaluate and treat every child, ages 0-8, who is referred to our system for physical therapy. In a typical day, I complete one new evaluation and see 7-8 other children for 45-minute treatment sessions. Now, due to COVID precautions, I use 15 minutes between each treatment to thoroughly clean my 600 sq. foot treatment space, clean all toys, change my scrubs, wash up, change my mask, and prep for the next patient. I treat neonates who have just been discharged from our hospital's NICU, lots of infants and toddlers with motor concerns, up to children around the age of 8, or sometimes older, who have a range of diagnoses including cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, autism, and various genetic syndromes. I have to document on each case I see, that takes about 5-15 minutes each, depending on the level of complexity. In my down time at work, I read research, take on-line courses, collaborate with colleagues, and take a few moments to stretch as I am nearing 50 and it is getting harder to keep up with the children! On my lunch break, I always get outside and run around the park across the street and get a bit of sunshine (or rain).
You are very appreciated during these times Susie! Thanks for taking all these extra precautions for our safety!
