Probably most important is listening to intended beneficiaries with an open mind. You will need to relate to them and understand their values and priorities, as well as the constraints and challenges they face. If you can help organize discussion groups and help them brainstorm their ideas and offer constructive criticism and encourage debate, that can be very helpful. It is also helpful if you can share ideas that have proven successful in similar places (but don't expect to be able to transplant a whole program from place A to place B without adjustment to address unique local issues!)
