After graduation, how do I find tech companies who are hiring non residents of USA and stand out among huge mass people?
#JULY20 #job_haunt #international_student
My major is computer science and I’m an international student. After graduation we can apply to work for a year as a part of practical training. But I’m worried about my career after that because my one year work permit will expire and can’t be renewed since I’m a non-resident of US. I have to find a company who can sponsor H1 visa so that I could continue my work. There are millions of international students, permanent residents/citizens of US, people with greater work experiences applying at the same time as me. How do I find tech companies who are hiring non-residents of USA and stand out among those huge mass people?

There are 3 essential methods to find a job of your interest.
1. LinkedIn Networking
2. Physical Networking
3. Applying on Job Posting sites.
NETWORKING (LinkedIn and Physical) is very essential since you get to interact with people from various fields and positions in various organisations. This helps in getting to know what, where, why and how people are working in a given industry. You get to learn from other people's experience, how they were able to secure a job and how their work is.
The other step is to apply for jobs. Apply for any job which is in your interests. Do not leave any job which you can apply. I secured my internship in the same way. So, do keep applying.
All the best for your future endeavors!

I am international student who is currently working in the tech industry. Actually you have three years of OPT before you get H1 visa becuase CS is considered STEM. Anyhow, i think the best way to get job is to go to conferences and like other people said you should use social media to reach out to recruiters. I hope this helps and good luck!

First of all Congratulations on taking the first step towards a bright future!! :-) Below are some steps that might help you in your job hunt.
BUILD YOUR PROFILE
This is the first step you have to take in order to stand out from the crowd.
1. Build your Resume
-- Resume if the first resource that will help you make the cut for job listings. Make sure you have enough projects listed on your resume that shows the practical application of whatever you have studied during your coursework. Also, pay special attention to the formatting of the resume and try to keep it as simple and readable as possible. I would like to stress the importance of using action verbs like 'Developed', 'Designed', 'Accomplished', etc while mentioning your projects.
2. Update your Linkedin
-- Having an updated Linkedin profile is very important in today's market as recruiters from many companies extensively use it in order to search for the right candidates for their job openings. Make sure you have all your skills, projects, education and other achievements listed on your Linkedin profile along with a professional picture.
Once you have done all the documentation, then its time to look for the jobs.
1. RESEARCH
-- There are plenty of websites that host job offerings. To name a few Linkedin, Glassdoor, Indeed, etc have plenty of jobs listed on them. They have a filter that can be used to look for companies offering sponsorship for employees for immigration-related matters. So, you can look at these places in order to identify a set of potential employers that will provide assistance with your H1B. Trust me there are a lot of companies out there who now offer immigration support.
2. REACHING OUT TO PEOPLE
--- Once you have identified the companies that interest you then you can look for open job positions in those companies that are apt for your profile. Check if you have any common LinkedIn connections that work in those organizations. Feel free to reach out to them, have a conversation about what they do at work, how the company is doing overall and ask them if they can refer you to a certain job opening that you are interested in. Even if you do not know anyone at a certain company, don't hold yourself back from connecting with people from that company over Linkedin and asking them for a referral. More often than not people are very helpful in giving a referral.
3. EMAIL THE RECRUITERS
-- It also helps to reach out to the Recruiters of a company you are interested in and ask about any openings they have for your profile. You can send them a friendly message on Linkedin or email them if you have their email address. Having a Linkedin premium membership also helps during this as that way you can have access to the email address of people and also additional insights into job offerings.
I hope this helps you with your job search. All the best to you!! :-)

I was an international student myself (at Penn state university) and was in the exact same situation where I needed to stand out to get sponsored by a company as a non US resident. Here is what I did:
- Researched the companies attending the university's career fair to see which ones would sponsor and stopped by the 10 out of 300 companies that were sponsoring at the time (2012), and dropped my resume
- used the university's website to apply to all companies that sponsored, no matter what industry, and looked for roles where I could fit
Thankfully , PwC was one of the companies that not only sponsored but also spotted my resume, requested an interview and here I am there now for the past 8+ years, had my H1B with them as well as green card now :)
