Sandeep’s Answer

Surgeons would read/refer books, watch videos and talk to the colleagues who would have done a particular case. However, if the case was handled earlier there is no preparation required.
However, experienced or senior surgeons would see the patient directly on the table :)

Sean’s Answer

Most of a surgeon's preparation is done in the years of training before practicing on their own, and most of the procedures performed they have done dozens to hundreds of times before! In my practice and experience the week before (occasionally the day before or day of), the surgeon reviews the patient's clinical history, diagnostic imaging and lab tests, story, and details for the planned surgery. Most of the time the surgeon has met the patient in clinic in the days to weeks before the surgery date. If the surgery is challenging or one not done often, surgeons will often work together as a team.

Estelle’s Answer

Jessica, good question. There is the long preparation and the short term preparation. I have been a gynecologic surgeon for 30 years. I went to medical school then 4 years of residency. I practiced for 2 years then became board certified. You have to prove that you can do a broad range of surgeries before finishing residency and again for board certification.

In the short term, however, I have a preop appointment with the patient the week before surgery. I review the patient's information and medical record right before surgery. I visit with the patient 30 minutes prior to surgery to make sure that they are feeling well and fully understand the procedure ahead. I get a good night's sleep before surgery days.
