Hi there! That is an amazing question. Since not all healthcare workers are made the same ;-).... we all have "battles" that we face or situations that arise where we learn more and more about ourselves. For me, the hardest thing about working in healthcare was witnessing the life slip away from someone. Whether it was after 30 mins of attempting every life saving procedure known to man, or your terminal cancer patient who knew for months they were not going to survive. It's a very surreal experience to stand by and hold a stranger's hand as they take their last breath. It was during my very first year of working in a trauma hospital that I learned what it meant to be an "empath". That was almost 20 years ago, and even now I feel the exact same way I did all those years ago. I realize that death is part of life, and for some healthcare workers I think they have a strength inside them that perhaps I personally am lacking.
You will experience an array of situations during your career as a medical professional, and with each experience you are given an opportunity to make an impact on another person's life. I tried to focus on what I could do for the living to help ease some of the pain from watching the dying.
Wishing you the best in your future endeavors!

Thank you, this was helpful.

Hi Daniela-
I have been a healthcare worker for over 30 years and have found my career as a nurse very rewarding. There are so many benefits being a health care worker: meeting new people and helping clients with their health care conditions are my most favorite. As with any career, each of us have situations that may present coping issues. For me, grief and loss is always the hardest. In health care, clients learn of cancer, heart disease and many other chronic conditions. Balancing the difficult times with good nutrition, exercise and time with family and friends overcomes those hard times. Take care and good luck!
