Lakshmi’s Answer

Hi Karoline,

I personally feel the students choosing doctor as a profession should have enough patience to listen the people. Good to know about the culture and society where we live, it would help us to understand better about the society to help people better in future. And a Doctor should be brave enough to handle all the cases. Doctor should always treat all the patients equally.

Thanks.

Avinash’s Answer

I would say a medical degree which is non-negotiable in first place :).
And after that comes these qualities of a person which make him a great doctor:
1) Service motive over profit motive
2) Patience to listen
3) Keen Observation

Estelle’s Answer

Determination, dedication, patience and compassion are extremely important when entering the field of medicine.
Determination because the road to a medical degree and residency training is long (12+ years of education)
Dedication because medical education and training is rigorous and demanding requiring intellectual focus.
Patience and compassion because physicians are working with people at their most vulnerable times of their lives.
Thank you comment icon Hi Estelle, this is a great list of traits! Can you go into more detail as to why they are important? Gurpreet Lally, Admin

Hannah’s Answer

It really depends. Do you want to be a surgeon? If so then you need to love getting up at 4am and working hard everyday on your feet. Do like solving puzzles like a detective? Then maybe something like pathology is for you.

Medicine is a profession unlike any other field. Yes I am biased because I am a mere 10 months away from being a doctor. It will take more from you than you were prepared to give ranging from sleep, lifestyle, time to favorite hobbies. It will rob you of a your pride as day after day you are faced with test results and exams that are meant to crush you. But it will also give you a reason to get up everyday knowing that you get to stand in the gap for people when they are in one of the most vulnerable times of their lives.

So it is important to decide why you want to be a doctor. Sit long and think deep about the driving reason that is unique and personal for you.

Then think about what kind of doctor you want to be.

The why will reflect alot of the things you need to reach the goal.

Then after this the real work begins. To become a doctor you need to prove you are worthy of taking care of another life by studying hard and getting good grades.

Hannah recommends the following next steps:

Find your WHY
What kind of doctor do you want to be?
Study hard!!!!!!
Spend some time with doctors who inspire you and get their real life advice
