Hi Jessica! Great question, with more than a single answer. I'm definitely not a CPA, but I am a fan of online learning. Like you, I was curious about the world of your average accountant - if you're a premium member on LinkedIn (I am in no way professionally associated with LinkedIn ), you should check out this course: https://www.linkedin.com/learning/finance-and-accounting-tips/introduction-to-the-weekly-series
YouTube is of course a free+viable option as well: https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=what+do+i+need+to+know+to+be+an+accountant
TL;DR: math, SQL/excel.
I hope this is helpful!

Hi there,
Number crunching, understanding of financial terms and metric is a given for an accountant.
I think where one differentiates themselves is actually deriving the insights from the numbers. This is where you provide your interpretation of what you think of the numbers, financial metric, ratios and what story they are telling.
This comes with experience. But you have to make a start.
Just remember - crunching the numbers - others can do as well (those who are trained)... There are few who can interpret and tell the story.
Hope this helps.
All the best.

Hi Jessica! As an accountant you should learn to deliver financial information accurately and timely . You have to get used to work under pressure especially at month end where you have to close the books before the due date. And you always have to find ways to improve your processes (Kaisen philosophy) and be more efficient and productive. Beside the accounting knowledge, an accountant should be detailed oriented, organized, adaptable, fast learner and good communicator.
From my own experience...as long as you like to work with numbers you should be fine :)
Hope this helps,
Alex
