What kind of jobs can I do that combine finance and politics (working in nonprofits or government)

I'm a senior in high school and my two main passions are politics and math. For this reason, I've decided to pursue a finance degree but lately I've been wondering if I should double major or minor in something political related (poli sci/ international relations/etc). Now I'm really confused because I don't want to choose a double major or minor without thinking about my career options first. #college-major #business At the end of the day, I want to be making a decent amount of money and helping underprivileged people through either expanding nonprofits or simply working in government. Help me out.

Jennifer’s Answer

Two areas come to mind.

Public policy:

You might find public policy interesting, and there's an increasing demand people with these skills, depending on where you want to live after college.

There are jobs in public policy in both private and public sector.

In a nutshell, it's a combination of math/analytical skills, research, collaboration/persuasion, and an understanding of administration/politics.

Economics:

There are private and public sector options in economics, depending on how much education you're interested in pursuing.

John’s Answer

Hello,
I've run for office and for someone who is interested in finance and politics when it comes to elections I see some positions that you could consider.
1. Treasurer of a campaign or political organization
2. Campaign Finance Manager
3. Campaign Fundraiser

You could also start your own Political Action Committee and raise money to support candidates, causes, etc..

Best of luck to you.

There’s several areas you can consider that are at the intersection of business and politics, or government more broadly:

1. The Federal Reserve
2. Local/Community Business Improvement Districts
3. U.S. Department of Treasury
4. Chamber of Commerce at different levels
5. Economic Development Corporations (usually a municipal department)
6. World Bank
7. Government Tech startups

Good luck!

Donna’s Answer

Hello! Great question! I was in a similar confused state and decided to peruse a Major and a double Minor. It was a lot of work however, 2 Major's was terrifying and I believed having a more diverse skill set that could be incorporated though out many potential career paths and internships would make me more marketable in the workforce. This proved to be a good choice as the life journey continued each and every experience could help relate to the other and continued to move up and around in the various areas. With a Finance Major that will allow many possibilities right out of school for in the door banking. A Minor in Political Science or something International will help round out other possibilities as you start on your journey. It can also allow for internships at a bank or in the local city hall tax department all these with give you much needed exposure, and hands on knowledge which is KEY!!!!

Donna recommends the following next steps:

Decide on your main focus for your Major, your suggestion of Finance is a good rounded start
Investigate the Minors that are offered to see what's potentially available as not all are
Decide if you want to potentially do a double minor or at least pick which one you will persue first
Investigate schools that align most closly with your Major and Minor
Continue with your volunteer work
