How can I apply to universities this summer/fall for political science/government focus, and still show interest in their musical theatre programs and presenting them my performing arts skills during applications?

I am set on studying government, public policy, or international relations in college as I plan to make social activism my future career and run for office one day. However, I also want to study musical theatre and continue my other passion in life without being restricted to only that study. What should I do in my applications? #JULY20

Hi Ellie! If you would like to double major in those two fields you have to find a university that offers both Political science and a drama major. For example, I study at NYU, and I know that you can double major across different schools. In your case, you would get a degree both from the college of arts and sciences and from Tisch (our arts school). I would advise you to apply to Tisch first and then make your way into CAS as Tisch is incredibly difficult to get in. But there are multiple schools out there that offer both majors, you just have to do the research if they allow you to double major and if the program fits your interests.

Izabella recommends the following next steps:

Research Schools that have both majors
Identify if you can double major
Apply to one of the majors
Once starting your class selections talk to your advisor about your plan
Have fun!
Thank you comment icon Thank you Izabella! NYU is actually on my list, but this was helpful in getting advice on which school to apply to first. Thank you again! Ellie

Not knowing what questions are on the application, I cannot be specific. I would suggest you apply to schools that offer both programs in some form. This will allow you to feel out which is your true passion as a career, and which you can do as a hobby. I changed majors several times in college. It took a little longer to graduate, but I finally landed with a degree I've used during my entire career. That's what college is for. Exploration. Also, I suggest volunteering or participating in activities (on and/or off campus) as you can in both areas. This will help you further narrow. Lastly, if the application allows for video submissions, that is a good way to showcase your talents.
