Going into nursing is a very rewarding yet demanding field. You get to meet many people and engage with them during some of their most vulnerable times. It is easy to take the stresses they may show personal at time. Having the ability to separate yourself and identify with their challenges can be helpful to the patient as well as yourself.

In nursing, having the ability to multitask is critical. In this field you will be challenged and pulled in multiple different directions simultaneously. Your ability to prioritize is essential. If you struggle with organizational skills nursing will likely be challenging.

Be prepared to work 12hr days. Some have challenges adjusting to these extended days. A typical schedule is 36hrs/week or 12hr shifts x 3 per week. You will likely have to work morning and night shift alternating weeks.

Nursing is rewarding and challenging. Many people go into nursing with a mindset of what they want to do and don't understand that you definitely have to work your way up in nursing. The best part is that there are so many options of things to do as a nurse. It's not just being a floor nurse in the hospital. If you are considering nursing, I suggest researching options of practices you can be in as a nurse. I think the most challenging part of nursing for me is trying to not take my day home with me. I have been in multiple jobs as a nurse and they all come with their challenges, but you always have those patients and situations that stick with you and that you bring home with you. Best advice: research your career options in depth before making a choice :) I am thankful for my decision to be a nurse.

I had known someone once who was a Human Resources Manager and the biggest challenge she faced was dealing with trouble employees and firing people. It never got easy to do that. But she was able to help people in that she became a counselor in a way. Many people went to HR with their problems and she always felt rewarded when they could walk away with a problem solved.

My wife is an RN nurse in a rehab facility. One of her biggest issues is physical pain from dealing with overweight incapacitated individuals and she sometimes works 14-16 hour shifts when people call in and the facility can't find coverage. She is rewarded in helping people that often times have no one else. Sometimes her patients only want someone to talk to - and often she is that person.

But definitely do your research as there are many different paths to take in the nursing profession.

Regarding your inquiry about a potential Human Resources internship, I would visit the career center of your school. They can determine if there are established partnerships with companies for these types of internships or co-op programs. You may even look to your local Staffing Agency for HR/Staffing & Recruiting/Talent Acquisition/Operations opportunities. These internships may vary between paid and non-paid, but these often apply towards college credits. The experience and exposure you gain from these interships will guide you in starting your career path and also gauge your interest in the field. From there, you may have some further insight into the field to determine if that is the path you wish to pursue or if you have a desire to evaluate other possible options.
