If you were a COTA before you were an OTR, Id like to hear about your experience transitioning from a COTA to an OTR (the differences, new things you had to get used to etc)

I am a COTA going back to school to get my R. When I graduate, I will have at least 3 years experience as a COTA. #college #college-major #career #career-counseling #government

Hi Calvin:
I went to Haiti initially as an exploratory visit with ISU. After that I took back 6 OT students with me to work in 2 different special needs orphanages. We did the evaluations and hired a Haitian rehab tech (raised his salary for the year on FB) then took down 10 suitcases of donations to equip the clinic. I would start by reading Mountains Beyond Mountains and contact Therapy Missions to go with them on a trip. Are you an OT? Meg

Hi Rachael: First of all I want to congratulate you for going back to become an OTR. Keep up on those studies, you will be glad you did! I went back for my bridge program from COTA to OTR in 2010, then recently completed a doctorate! Going back and becoming an OTR has opened many wonderful doors for me from teaching at a University to starting a clinic in Haiti. I have worked in several areas and never stop learning. It forced me to look at things on a deeper level by being the one responsible for the evaluation and treatment plans.
Best of luck with your career! Sincerely, Meg
Thank you comment icon That's amazing! May I ask how you went about starting a clinic in Haiti? I am also interested in international aide. Calvin Cheng
